According to reports, Xiaomi has found a new partner for branding its smartphones with camera equipment. After Leica had worked for Huawei for many years, it seems that Xiaomi will soon be taking over the helm and working with the German partner. The first signs of a collaboration between Xiaomi, Leica are evident in a newly released version of the Xiaomi app. Particularly, the MIUI Gallery Editor version 0.7.5 that comes with current Xiaomi smartphones has strings that indicate a Leica partnership.
Leica filters for the camera apps
Xiaomi is working on filters that are only compatible with smartphones with Leica cobranding. These filters bear the brand name of the manufacturer and are designated with names like “Leica Monochrom”, Leica Monochrom High Contrast”, and “Leica Natural”. Huawei is still working with Leica so it’s not clear if the old exclusivity will be lost. Three Leica-branded filters are included in the Huawei P50 Pro. Huawei has been a partner in the manufacture of smartphones’ camera lenses for many years. The collaboration was mainly focused on “optimizing” the software of the cameras and sometimes to certification.
It is not yet clear if this will be the case for Xiaomi’s new smartphone model with Leica branding. Xiaomi has not yet entered into any partnerships with other specialist camera manufacturers. This concept has been used by other providers for some time. HMD Global, for example, has worked with Zeiss since its Nokia smartphones were launched. However, Vivo, the Xiaomi competitor, has taken this position. OnePlus recently began working with the Swedish camera specialist Hasselblad.
