Microsoft has once again tried to integrate self-promotion into its Office products. Some users have seen ads that could convince them to sign up for a discounted subscription in recent days. Redmond appears to be testing multiple variants. Apart from the Microsoft 365membership option, you can still purchase a separate Office 2021 license.
Some customers prefer to only pay once for a product. Redmond is trying to convince customers to change to subscriptions to make them more flexible. These ads are now available in Office products, provided that the apps have an Office 2021 license. Microsoft 365 customers won’t see the ad.
The ads are currently being shown to only a few users. Lee Holmes, a Twitter user, saw the ad and shared a screenshot. He is offered the “limited offer” of a three-month family membership for 99cs.
Ads are currently being tested.
A noisy bleeding computer (through Hacks) displayed a different ad version to other users. Microsoft is testing different versions and seeing which gets the most clicks. Microsoft is yet to decide if they will display the banners to more users in the future.
Redmond-based Microsoft has expanded such self-promotion in the past. Microsoft announced in spring that it was testing Windows ads in File Explorer. Microsoft has returned to this site, but the Edge browser was advertised previously in Settings and via the taskbar.
