According to Reuters the American defense company Northrop Grumman Corp will be testing a prototype combat laser that will gradually increase its power until the end of this year, according to Reuters.
The Pentagon spent $ 72 million to create a prototype. Lasers will be able to focus energy and track a moving target. This allows them to be used to create missile defense systems.
It was reported earlier that the US military had been able to use a laser to destroy an artillery mine. This operation was part of the development of the Raytheon combat laser module of 50-kilowatt Raytheon. The beam destroyed many mines measuring 60mm.
As part of the Directed Energy Maneuver–Short Range Air Defense program (DE M-SHORAD), which is developing directed-energy weapons, tests were conducted at White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico in May. This weapon could be part of an American short-range air defense system. The laser system was designed to protect ground troops against drones and other aircraft.
