Samsung has launched a new product in collaboration with AMD. It’s not a SoC or GPU this time.
The second generation of the innovative SmartSSD is what we are referring to, according to the company. Samsung refers to the product as a computing storage. This is actually a solid-state drive that has its own FPGA. The first generation used the Xilinx FPGA. The second uses the development by this company. But, keep in mind, it already belongs AMD.
FPGA is required by the drive to increase system speed and decrease dependence on the CPU/GPU.
Samsung SmartSSD is able to process data directly unlike existing SSDs. This reduces data transfer between RAM, CPU and GPU. This technology eliminates bottlenecks that can occur when data is moved between storage devices. It also results in an increase in system performance as well as a higher energy efficiency.
The second generation Samsung SmartSSD is more efficient than the first. It uses software and intellectual property. Scan-intensive database queries can be processed in half the time of conventional SSDs and power consumption can be up to 70%. CPU usage can also be reduced by up to 97%.
