According to the FBI, equipment from Chinese telecom company Huawei placed on Midwest cell towers is capable of disrupting communications with the US Department of Defense and forces that control nuclear weapons.
CNN spoke to former and current FBI employees under strict anonymity. The FBI official stated that this could affect our ability to control the nuclear triad and touch on sensitive issues.
Sources confirmed that it is difficult to prove that data was intercepted and then sent to another country. It is therefore unclear if China was collecting data through its equipment.
The Chinese government denies spying on the United States. CNN also asked Huawei for comment. Huawei said that their products cannot operate within the Department of Defense’s range.
CNN reported that the FBI is investigating Huawei equipment since before the Obama administration. Reuters reported Thursday that the Joe Biden administration is looking into Huawei because of concerns about its equipment being planted in cell towers close to military bases.
Shortly after President Joe Biden was inaugurated, the Department of Commerce continued its investigation. According to the publication, it was unable to determine whether Huawei equipment can collect sensitive US national security information.
